Using Postini
Postini - AntiSpam and Anti-Virus System
What is Postini?
Postini is an antispam and antivirus system owned and run by Google. Emails sent to you go through Postini before they are put into your mailbox on our server for you to collect. This way they are sanitised (viruses removed) and clean (spam removed) BEFORE they get to your mailbox.
Each night a quarantine summary is sent via email to you which lists what Postini has done on your behalf. You can check to see whether it is doing what you want.
What If Postini Quarantines an Email I Want?
Occasionally, an email is caught in a spam filter that you really want to see - for example, I get emails from LastMinute.com and they were caught by Postini as spam.
But this is not a problem.
If you suspect that our spam filter has caught a legitimate email to you, then you can login and ask Postini to deliver it!
Web Address: https://login.postini.com/exec/login
Email Address: your email address
Password: your positini password
You can then check through the quarantined emails to see if the one you are after is there, and click the link to "Deliver" it.
Postini will then deliver the message to your mailbox.
Forgot Your Postini Password?
We all have many passwords that we have to remember and perhaps inevitably we sometimes forget them or lose them.
If you have forgotten your password, Postini provides you with the opportunity to reset your password.
1. Go to the Postini login page and try to login using the details you believe are correct.
2. When you click the 'Login Button' you will be sent to the 'Invalid Login' screen.
3. Click the 'Forgot your password' link which give you the opportunity to receive a temporary password allowing your to get access to the Postini system.
4. When you receive your new password login as before. If you are successful, then click the 'My Settings' link at the top right of the page.
5. From the 'My Settings' page, click the 'Change Password' link.
6. This will bring you to a form where you can enter the password Postini sent you in stage 3 above, and you will be able to change the password to one you can remember!
Changing Your Postini Password
Changing your password for Postini is very straightforward.
1. Login to Postini as normal.
2. Click the 'My Settings' link in the top right hand corner of the page.
3. This will bring you to a page where you can select a 'Change Password' link.
4. Finally, you will be given the opportunity to set a new password.
Building Approved Senders Lists / Blocked Senders Lists
Of course, Postini might catch the next LastMinute.com email too! So, I have added them to the Approved Senders List.
Through the 'My Settings' link (top right), add people to an "Approved Senders List" which will ensure that Postini
will not block emails from them in the future.
Alternatively, you can add people to a "Blocked Senders List" which will ensure that Postini
will block emails from them in the future.
Filter Level
You can also set the level of aggression that the filters apply to your emails using the 'Manage Junk Filters' settings in the 'My Settings' area. The more 'aggressive' the filtering, the more likely it will kick out every spam, but also the more chance something legitimate might be caught too!
Catchall Email Addresses
Years ago, it was normal practice to set up a 'Catchall' email account. This email account caught all the mail that wasn't destined for a known email address. This was useful if people mistyped your email address - someone would still get the email and could forward it to you. More than likely, you had the catchall account anyway.
However, Spammers got into the habit of sending email to madeup email addresses - cdxvb@example.com - and these all went into the 'Catchall' account - thousands of them!
So, now, unless an email is addressed either to your proper email address (or an alias - see below), it will be rejected.
Adding Aliases
Aliases are alternative email addresses that will deliver to your mail email account.
So, for example, you may want the "sales@..." to be delivered to your normal email account.
It is simple to set this up in Postini.
1. First login to your Postini account as described above.
2. Click the Settings link in the top right hand corner.
3. The page will load revealing three boxes. The third box - Personal Settings - contains a link entitled - 'Add Alternative Email Addresses'. Click this.
4. Add the email address you want to have as an alias and click 'Add Alias'.
Within a short time, this email address will now accept email and send it to your main email address (the address you used to login to the Postini administration system).
